I first read this novel forty-five years ago. Some parts of the story stuck with me through the years. A couple months ago I web-searched the novel's title to see if I could obtain a copy. The search results directed me to Amazon & Barnes & Nobel, both electronic versions were priced the same. After a careful second reading I believe The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is the most pleasing and interesting novel I have ever read! This novel does not offer raw language, descriptive sex or blood & guts violence. What it does provide the reader a beautiful protracted love story, a snapshot of Appalachia culture and a description of the introduction of an economic way of life that remains with parts of Appalachia today. The author John Fox Jr 1862-1919 unfortunately passed too soon - I believe he had some good stories still to be told. If you choose to read The Trail of the Lonesome Pine web-search the author, he was no pilgrim. He served with distinction as a war correspondent with the Rough Riders in Cuba and reported from the Russo-Japanese War for Scribner's Magazine. I have since ordered and read the other two of Fox's Appalachia "trilogy". Both very good reads. Five big stars for . . . Lonesome Pine. RIP John Fox Jr. an American author of distinction.

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine John Fox Jr 9780813101569 Books Reviews

The story is one that those of us from these hills hear often of the outsider who comes in to the mountains. This author, however, does a wonderful job capturing the time, situation, and the people of the mountains. The clash of cultures where the intelligent, fiercely loyal mountaineer must learn to live with the outsider is well portrayed.

I immediately loved June who falls head over heels for John Hale, the outsider. She is incredibly smart and, with John's assistance, becomes cultured. John sees in June all of the things she could be outside of the hills. I don't want to spoil it, but June has several revelations about John, her family, and the mountains which were well written and entirely believable.

Be sure to take a bit of time to read the mountain dialogue; you'll pick up an amazing mix of languages we are losing daily. When reading, after every few words I would pick up one that reminded me of my grandparents who grew up near the Tennessee side of Cumberland Gap.

The clan system in which family doesn't turn its back on each other comes across clearly in the writing and, although it seems antiquated, the outsider and the reader begin to understand the pride of the mountain folks.

The middle of the book did start drag just a touch; however, the pace picked back up pretty quickly and the end moved incredibly fast. I appreciate the author's dedication to the people of the mountains who he portrays accurately and not as ignorant, unenlightened people.

If you liked this book, I recommend "The Tall Woman" by Wilma Dykeman.
The story is very good - I would rate it 5 star. The print is very small and paragraphs are almost non existent. It's as though someone
copied from the book and omitted the format that should have been used. I also bought the DVD and the movie doesn't follow the book.
the book story is much better.
Like the Hatfields and McCoys, the Tolivers and the Falins are bitter enemies. Enter John Hale, and as hard as he tries to not be a part of their feud he is entangled because of his relationship with June Toliver. From rags to riches and back to rags, will love or loyalty unite or divide them forever? The Lonesome Pine knows. An amazing good book. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
The title of this novel, "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine," conjured up some memory of such a title from my past, I don't know in what context, but this is why I ordered it on my . It was a fascinating read in any event, from the beginning, where the two main characters, a young man and a little girl, accidentally meet by a huge pine tree in the woods somewhere in the Appalachians (probably western VA, WV or KY). The young man, who is fishing at the time but is involved with the development of coal mining in the region, soon meets the little girl's father, a member of one of two large feuding families. The young man becomes more influential in the area as time passes but tries to be neutral as concerns the feuding factions, though his actions are often misunderstood. At the same time he is very taken by the little girl and hopes for something better than a hillbilly life for her. With patience he obtains the blessing of her father to provide for her education.

The little girl grows up and goes through changes, the coal mining industry flourishes but later fails, and the young man's fortunes change. The feud subsides somewhat while the coal mining brings prosperity to the region, but flares up again as the prosperity subsides. In the meantime the young man has fallen in love with the little girl, now in her late teens, while she is torn between a love for him who has done so much for her and other loyalties.

The novel takes place around 1900 and was made into a play, I understand. I can see how it would adapt very well to the theater.

My only criticism of the book is in its length. There were years to cover, but the story still seemed a little wearying to me. When is all this feuding finally going to come to a conclusion, I wondered, and when will the girl finally decide what kind of life she is going to lead? But the story is a great one and has a happy ending (which I always like), so perhaps I only needed to be taught a lesson in patience. I certainly recommend the book. In fact, thinking back, I realize I love the story. Just be prepared to spend time reading it!
